Lowrance LHR-80 waterproof VHF radio/GPS

altWhile poking around the marine section of the Lismore show this weekend gone I found an interesting new product from Lowrance at the Ballina Boating Bits stand. Say hello to the LHR-80 waterproof handheld VHF radio combined with GPS, which really is a combination that makes sense for coastal kayak fishing - especially those of us in Adventure Islands.

It was displayed in a box of 2 units priced at AUD$300, which I thought was surprisingly inexpensive. If I'd have had the cash spare I would have thrown it down straight away. Whilst the specs are similar, the added GPS functionality makes it a more attractive proposition that my current Eagle EHR-10 VHF radio (which I'm really quite happy with). Here's the lowdown, according to Lowrance:

Enhanced with a built-in GPS receiver, the Lowrance LHR-80 is a full-featured, free-floating, handheld VHF marine radio with the added convenience of a simple plotter with Great Circle waypoint navigation, Man Over Board functionality and storage for up to 500 waypoints.

Hi Josh - after talking to you some weeks ago about radios I found the LHR-80 and ended up getting one - brilliant kit. A bit more expensive than the Eagle but less than the Icom. What I like is the GPS - gives postion and speed on the screen in BIG letters for old eyes.

It also has the distress button which transmits your GPS positon. The catch is if want to activate the distress transmitter part you have to do the Marine VHF radio course to get a certificate number which you then submit to get the unit registered. I found a place that did it for $140 and they come to your home.

Radio reception is very good - listened to Southport from the Tweed River about 4 weeks ago, and it's small enough to fit in the pocket of the PFD which is always good.

I will post the links when I get my own computer back on line.

Excellent, thanks for the follow up on that Charlie. Good to hear you're radio equipped. Every AI owner going coastal should have one I reckon.
