Anyone paying attention to the Plano range of waterproof tackle boxes would know about the variant they've had available for years, which has long been rather popular among kayak fishos, and for good reason. For one, Plano are simply good at making tackle boxes and secondly, they were typically more water-tight than most other tackle boxes available, which is a plus in a kayak for obvious reasons. However, I've always had a bit of a problem with the terms 'waterproof' or water-tight' when discussing these boxes because up until the point that Plano redesigned them recently, it wasn't really correct to be calling them waterproof and much fairer to describe them as water resistant. In a nutshell, the seals simply weren't terribly good... or perhaps another way to say it that the way in which they were incorporated into the box wasn't that great... and the hinged hatches were kind of flimsy as well. The newer design addresses those problems nicely, however.

I use the larger size for storage of backup supply of larger lures for open water use. This box lives within the waterproof bag attached to the back of my skipper seat
Not only have Plano corrected that in their new waterproof tackle boxes (which look to be exactly that) by incorporating a better seal and perhaps more importantly, improving the way in which it works. They have achieved this by planting the seal into the lid rather than on the base. Because the seal is now on the lid, it is far less likely to pick up grains of sand, dirt and other gunk and thus much easier to keep clean (ergo, sealing more reliably). They've also improved the lid latching system, which is now stronger and clamps tighter. This coupled with the lid-side seal make me feel a whole lot more comfortable about putting my precious tackle into them and using them on my wet & wild Adventure Island. If there's any kayak that will expose how waterproof something isn't, it's the AI. But I think the new Plano boxes will hold up just fine for that, and any other kayak. They're also very reasonably priced to, which is always nice to report. There are 3 sizes available from Hobie kayak dealers, as well as many tackle stores. I'm using a large one for large lures, two mediums (one for estuary lures, another for small to mid-sized off-shore lures) and a small box for storage of hooks, swivels, sinkers and jigheads.

I store my waterproof tackle boxes in a bigger waterproof box - boxes within a box. Almost like the 'Inception' of kayak fishing tackle box storage solutions.
