Bully Rail Mount Bar

As previously reported, I took a real liking to Railblaza's Track mount system when I paused to investigate. After looking closer we discovered that for some models of Hobie mirage kayaks (depending on user height and kayak model) that the width of the rail could get in the way of a full extension pedal stroke - an inch or 2 can make all the difference in some cases. After showing a sample to numerous customers looking to fit out their kayak, we also observed concerns of weight (it weighs over a kg) and price (it costs over $100). Finally, some were concerned about the fact that there are currently limited options in Railblaza accessories, especially when it comes to rod holders (of which there is only one model available).

So I started thinking about an alternative system that would avoid all of those issues. The solution came in the form of a 1-1/4" rail bar (fibreglass shaft was the lightest option) attached to the hull using brackets to suit. Once attached various RAM components can be fitted using the ball & socket system. Not only does this keep all of the components clear of the pedals and clear of interference in the cockpit, it also means that numerous devices can be mounted without having to drill any more holes into the hull to fit them. At worst only 4 drill holes are required to fit the brackets. In the case of the Adventure here, we used sidekick mount bar adaptors to avoid having to drill any holes whatsoever. The 'Bully rail mount bar' as we call it weighs only 220grams (about 1/5th of the Railblaza track mount) and sells for under $50 (more than 50% less expensive).

The following RAM ball mounts can be fitted to the Bully rail mount bar:

RAM C 1-1/4" Railmount: RAM-219U

RAM C Ball & Strap mount: RAM-108BU

RAM B Ball & Strap mount: RAM-B-108BU

RAM U 1" Rail mount: 72023017

binks-marine-hobie-sail-furler-kitI've never quite figured out why Hobie don't make a furling kit for their drop-in sailkits but it's nice to know someone is out there making them, because furling systems beat the hell out of trying to wind up a sail by...
