Great White circles Slim, Shark Bay

Author: josh

altFellow NSW based Clarence coast local (Yakass and Kayak Fishing Down Under AKA KFDU member) Peter Bostock, AKA Slim, had a rather close shave with a 15' great white shark while kayak fishing in the now legendary shark-kayak-encounter hot-spot, the aptly named Shark Bay. After spotting him, the shark made for Peter's kayak who then swam around in circles for the next 20 minutes wondering just how to get past the Shark Shield so as to get to the potentially tasty meal on board, ie: Slim.

The full story can be read at Slims report at Kayak Fishing Downunder.

Started heading for me new go-to spot when I realised there was a 20 foot centre consol sitting right where I wanted to be. No dramas I thought I was still 100m from them so i might start sounding out this area. I look up and see the two blokes in the boat jumping up and down and yelling at me...Almost instantly I realised what they were signalling. I reached back and spun the "on" knob on the Shark Shield. Sure enough I can see a BIG fin circling around the back of their boat. No dramas I thought...this spot looks ok..I don't need to be over there..In fact I think a bit closer to shore may be a better option this arvo anyway..You guessed it..like magic that damn shark left them and headed straight for me. I pretty well froze. For the next 30 minutes it circled me, it was every bit of 15 feet. It was the size of a car. The centre consol came roaring over to see if I was ok..and offered me a seat in their boat. I declined as the shield was working great. I also knew that I would definately fall out of my yak trying to board their boat so I just wasn't keen on that at all.

Sadly, Pete forgot to take his camera out there so no, this isn't a photo he took. I just added it for sensational effect!
