- About me
- A quiet life in the country. The chance to spend some spare time fishing. A few friends and a good woman. Life can be sweet.
I'm also a senior scientist so if you're a radical greeny or one of their acolytes, that sound is me howling with laughter at your ill informed, ascientific, asocial, quasi-religious, poorly thought out and largely unfounded beliefs.

All that just goes to show that when you let politicians and bureaucrats make a decision, nothing good comes of it; 'hmm where will we build a new bureaucrat capital? Canberra of course, it has so much going for it..."

- Daemon replied to the topic Re: Happy camper! in the forum.Might depend on the balance between the current draw of your sounder, and the output of you solar panel. If you have a big sounder, like a HDS 5 or a 798cx si, you might find that since you’re burning power much faster than your charging, and through the same daylight time period. You might only get a time extension to flat of 25 to 50%. This is still useful of course, but it might not be sufficiently useful to justify the cost and mucking about when compared to just using an 18ah battery. Obviously, with a smaller sounder, as your draw approaches your charge, your run time extends dramatically and becomes truly useful.

Just before I flew out to work last time, I went out targeting bream, and couldn’t pull anything except silver trevally. Nice healthy pan sized silver trevally to be sure, and plenty of them, but not one bream. They put up a great fight on light gear and are fun to catch and ok to eat, but I was chasing bream and didn’t get a one, unlike my wife casting from the boat ramp, who caught and released bream all afternoon. I even staked out just off the boat ramp and shadowed her casts for a while and you know what?... Silver trevally; argh.
Then yesterday I went out in near perfect conditions again to chase bream, and couldn’t catch anything except sweep. For five hours I tried every bream prone spot in the area, every bream lure and technique, and caught wads of sweep in the too small to eat between the bones size range. Again, they put up a decent fight and it’s all good fun, but they’re not bream. I even switched to flathead tactics for a while and caught, you guessed it, more sweep. Who knew that sweep would pick a soft plastic up off the bottom?
Is it the fish gods having some fun with me? Is it really that I’m actually quite a shit fisherman, and the days where I catch what I target are more luck than judgement? Is the universe sending me some deeply meaningful signs, encoded in fish? No idea, but I imagine it’d be frustrating if I didn’t have an, ‘any fish you catch is fun’ philosophy.
How often does it happen to you? What forms have you seen the syndrome take? Is there a name for this bizarre form of fishing frustration... fyshlexia ?
Tell me that I’m not alone...

- Daemon replied to the topic Re: Home Made Soft Plastics in the forum.Quote text:That all said, I ran a soft plastic imitation experiment once, using peices of squid rigged on a SP jig and fished like a soft plastic. And oh my god, that works wonders!
Difference there Josh, is that you’re taking the best of both worlds. You’re using a proven effective and durable bait, and cutting it into a shape that itself has such an enticing action and look that fish are known to bite it even if it’s not made of food. You’re making something that money can’t buy.
I could see myself sitting down in the evening and carving soft plastic shapes from squid, and impaling them on Link: Spines before bagging them into the freezer, before I could see myself pissing about with bottles of reeking liquid plastic and making dodgy softies at twice the price, then wondering how to get the mess of the kitchen bench before my wife sees it.

After another unusually wet spring and summer, which was preceeded by an unusually wet winter, it looks like we're in for a real freezer of a winter this year. Since I work in the tropics it's going to be a real trauma every time I get off the plane I think.

Never had such cold winters or so much rain since we got global warming.
Have the fishies started to go to winter mode yet guys?
