Yakfishwest Moore River Bream Bash

The picturesque coastal town of Guilderton was the location for the Yakfishwest Moore River Bream Bash, a social comp for our forum members. Located along the banks of the Moore River, a short but healthy little waterway that is usually closed to the ocean, and harbours many feisty black bream hidden away in it's waters. This timing was a challenge, as the river had just broken its banks 4 weeks before, then only a week before the comp, closed up again! The star below shows the launch spot, on the banks of a small tributory called Silver Creek. The locals have just campaigned to have this area closed to boats and kayak only, so we were happy to comply!

Also Perth was in the middle of a freezing spell, we left early to frost on the car, then on the way the wing mirrors would freeze, and after a refreshing 110km trip, as the sun arouse in the eastern sky, we arrived at the comp site. There was already half a dozen or more cars, and kayaks being rigged and readied, people crawling out of trailers half asleep, and cooking up bacon and egg breakfasts........ Apparently it was -1 there that night, and with a fair few brave souls camping the night in the caravan park, it was a chilly morning, tho perfect cloudless sky and little breeze, was set for a glorius day. Plenty of familiar faces, and plenty of new ones, great to see, fairly sure i got to meet most of you guys!

Plenty of Yaks

By 8.20ish, everyone was assembled at the several launch sites on offer along the short stretch of the creek, Paul gave a quick outline of the categories, followed by safety briefing, and their off!! The narrow creek made for a spectacular start as the boys scooted off, winding there way along the tree lines creek to the main river. From here anglers had the option of going right to the mouth of the river only 500m toward the sea, or left further inland with kilometers of river to explore.

Myself and Carmel headed up river, to an area i'd spotted on Google that looked like a few holes, and good bank structure. The water temp was way down, and most of the fish were hiding in heavy structure so we worked our way along a rocky dropoff into deeper water. A woop from Carms as she hooks the first Bream casting a Baby Vibe, at 23cm just under size and goes back. I soon had a bit of a hot patch after tying on a Khamsin Tiny and land my two best fish of the day, at 28cm ish, they were to prove too small.

First of my two keepers.

And number 2.

The fishing for the morning was generally slow, and we headed back to base after the 4 hours wondering of others fortunes. I soon saw what was in some of the other wells, so weighed up first, for a measly 640 odd grams... Let my two tiddlers go and then enjoyed the tight contest, and beautiful bags of fish weighed in by the winners. Amazingly only 10 grams seperating 1st and 2nd with James just outdoing Pete, well done guys, excellent fishing, and also Ben well done too mate. The photo comp was also a cracker, with half a centimeter seperating first with a 33.5cm fish by Dale Sniffen, just pipping Byron's 33cm bruiser. A few locals had seen all the activity and watched the presentation unfolding, great to see some solid fish on display. A few were suprised and excited to see them quickly released, and powering off into the deeper water.

Pete Berlinski with two chunky Moore River bream.

A great day was had by all, huge thanks to Paul for his efforts in making this Comp happen, well done mate and thanks, it's nice to be able to fish a few myself!! :D

Also thanks to all the sponsors, Sailpower (R.I.P.), Western Angler, WAFM, Adventure West, Urban Tackle Imports and Halco. And a MASSIVE thankyou to all those who came along and competed, without you guys we wouldn't have a comp, so cheers! Hopefully next time we can swell the numbers further, i look forward to it!

A great turnout from yakkers and spectators.
