My intention was to somehow set up a kayak fishing tour guide buisness, and part of that coastal kayak fishing tour was about finding the very best place to do it. The Jervis Bay area - where I lived for a year - was a potential candidate, as was the Clarence Valley, where I now reside. I've since abandoned those plans, which is one of the reasons I was fairly relaxed about changing the domain name from yakabout to yakass. I felt the phrase 'yakass' was a better fit for where yakabout in its current form was going and the popular response to my videos had a lot to do with that inspiration.
Why did I abandon the idea of getting involved in kayak fishing tours? Well, partly because I can be a fairly direct sort of a guy, even grumpy at times and thats not a befitting trait for a tour guide (I barely get away with it as a daytime salesman). I learned this through numerous kayaking excursions with in-experienced kayakers, particularly through on-water kayak demos, which I do fairly often. Whilst I'm usually pretty patient and understanding with beginners, there is a limit and it seems to be time-span related. My character isn't quite right for the task of fully guided kayak tours for newbies. There are guys living locally who would be a lot better at touring than me (based on their greater extensive knowledge, let alone characters; Slim for kayak fishing tours and Riverrat for scenery, wildlife and camping tours). Besides, open water is my passion and setting up open-water kayak tours is a precarious proposition in todays litigation-laden world. Kayak fishing tours into Shark Bay? Mission impossible!
It was easy for me to let these aspirations go. There are so many other projects that have gathered steam in the background that are far more interesting to me anyway. War on Fish is one of them and that is something that may get it's own website next year. Certainly, if things go as planned, I'll be devoting more time, money and energy into that project when I pick it up again. But between now and then, there's an itch I need to scratch...
For some time I have been contemplating another side project - something I have somehow managed to relate to kayak fishing - that has become more and more interesting as my deliberations have progressed. Its the type of project I have already pulled off once before (for an entirely different theme and industry) and the more I think about it in relation to kayak fishing, the more the concept takes positive form. It's a concept with real entertainment power, but also one that holds a lot of potential for education and even cross promotion.
If any of you guys have sensed the relief I feel on completing WoF, now you know why. I have something even more interesting ready to sink my teeth into and I needed the time spare to go forth and make it happen. I will reveal more about this project when the time is right to do so, but as a teaser of sorts, I can tell you all right now that when it appears, it will appear under the yakabout domain name (which the AKFF have already blackbanned, so this will save them the effort of banning yet another URL!). This is not something I'm going to rush because it's not something that can be rushed, but when a few more T's are crossed and a few more i's are dotted I'll spill the beans and then post regular updates on development progress. I look forward to revealing the final product to you all.
