Paulo's epic Lord Howe Isl report

paulo_kingy_lord_howe_island

Hobie team member Paul 'Paulo' O'leary recently returned from a kayak fishing odyssey at Lord Howe Island and by all accounts, it sounds like he and his companions (Lynette and Grant) had a ripper of a time. With nothing but great things to report on his experience there, Paul has shared the adventure in an epic 5-part report in the Hobiefishing.com.au forums. You can find out more about kayak-fishing-kingy-heaven at the following links: Part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5.
Way to go Lynette!

Thanks everyone. It was indeed a memorable place. Grant has had his AI for about 6 months now and is completely sold. Anthony was also with us on the trip but had an injury half way through the week that kept him off the water when the fish were biting.
My king went 1.32m and 19.5kg after bleeding. Lynette's one at approx 14 kg and just over 1.1m. That place is kingy heaven.

Mate, fantastic trip great pix very entertaining and informative and that kingie's an absolute horse, thanks and well done.

Just a couple of questions, how long did it take for the yaks to get over there on the boat and how expensive is it?

XD, the supply ship 'Island Trader' leaves Port Macquarie every two weeks or so. There is a website with the schedule. They normally leave on a Thursday and dock on the high tide on the Sat. We were lucky to time it so they arrived the sat, we flew in the Sun and boat and plane left the Sat two weeks later. We drove them to Port and picked them up after. Two epic journeys.
I wouldnt freight them over again. There are plenty of the yaks including an outback, a revo and an AI. Part One of my trip report had all the hire details in. Including the petrol to Port and back x 2 it worked out about $950 a yak.
If I went again I would hire yaks for the week. The AI was $60 a day, the other yaks would be cheaper. Its a 2-3km pedal to the fish. If I couldnt manage to get all the gear I needed + clothes in under the 14kg + 4kg hand luggage limit ( I reckon I cud). I would freight a box to the island trader and freight it back again.

Im hoping to write an article covering just that for yakass soon.

6 months? Has it been that long? Did I just dream Grant telling me that he thought the AI wouldn't suit his style (at Sth West Rocks)? Either way, good to see him among our ranks.

Grant is from Melbourne. Not Grant Ashwell that you are thinking of from SWR fame.

Ah, of course... that grant!

We must work on the Ashwell rendition.
