This section of the Yakass website is a bit like an online focus group where we are aiming to gather opinions on various topics relating to kayak fishing. The intended outcome is two-fold: to help Yakass gauge public opinions on issues that may affect future content and direction of the site. It is also hoped that information gained via the collective responses will be helpful for readers of the site as well. To that end you are cordially invited to take part in any of the polls shown here (all of them are listed in the right side menu). New polls will be added regularly, so check back every so often. You're invited to suggest a poll topic, which you can do in the 'suggest a poll' module to the right.

My first trip off Caloundra last December was the best day I had prior to the marlin. I landed 3 good snapper and on the way home picked up an 8.5kg Yellowfin Tuna. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for three days.

My addiction started early learning kayaking and fishing…but not together around the same time. Over the last 30 odd years has waxed and waned but since moving to mackay (1996)it has greatly improved.
  • Steve 'Couta 1' Smith
I hooked into 3 black marlin over 2 days off the gravel patch, off Burleigh Heads about two years ago fishing with some mates. Unfortunately they are still swimming out there. So have to wait for all the variables and luck to be right in the equation again before we try again.

My first attempt to fish from a kayak was in 1964. I was in the United States Coast Guard, I tried to fish from a sit-inside – which didn’t work out – and I was fishing just outside the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California.
  • Steve Fields on ABT Series 2
The 2009/10 ABT/Hobie Kayak Fishing series is “the premium kayak event” across Australia. You can follow the event at www.bream.com.au and at www.hobiefishing.com.au. We also have a few other announcements, so watch this space. Again, many thanks for the opportunity to chat with you on Yakabout. Yakabout and sites like Yakabout are replacing fishing forums which have seem to have little to offer these days.

I always loved to travel and to be outdoors. Growing up close to the European Alps I spent many years climbing, caving, mountaineering and mountain biking, as well as canoeing and kayaking. For many years I spent every weekend sleeping outside, summer & winter. I travelled to more than 50 countries, cycled from Germany to Spain, Hungary and through Iceland, travelled the Sahara in a 4WD and so on. I like the Nomadic lifestyle and to have nature around me. No TV-show will ever beat a night by a camp fire!

Get off your bum and enter.  It dosent matter if you are a beginner, we are too, so no one can justify an ego and we are all there to have fun.  Start out with the 2 best outfits you can afford, some Gulp soft plastics, a couple of bibbed hard body lures, a couple blades and some good leader.  You don’t need much gear to get fish.

In my experience, when a great white shark approaches a kayak, it will do so will a high degree of curiosity - but not certainty. It will come up and have a look and more importantly, come up and have a sniff. It will try to determine if the kayak is food of some kind, not brazenly just leap out and snap out at the occupant.

I also currently own a Hobie Pro Angler which has been used in every tournament since October last year (Fresh and saltwater) and it definitely holds many advantages. For instance, its manoeuvrability in close quarters to structure for pin point casting in Bream competitions is ideal while its wide shape, stability and pack ability really make it a trolling workhorse. Last weekend I pushed and pedalled for around 8kms (Groin injury well and truly overcome) and covered ground far more accurately than I could paddling and shifting my Quest around (With over 30 kilograms of water behind my seat mind you).
