Kayak expedition rations

Author: josh

kayak_fishing_trip_rationsOn our previous Fraser Island kayak fishing expedition, Holger was by far the most organized when it came to snack food and this year I figured I'd take a similar approach. Whilst all my snacks for the week were grouped together in one drysack, Holger had deliberately split his up into daily rations, each of them sealed for freshness (and from the elements) in ziplock bags. It's a far better way to go because just if all snacks are stored in one bag and some salt water manages to get in there, it could potentially ruin a weeks worth of food.

This time around I've also taken the precaution of making sealed rations, although instead of using ziplock bags to store each ration pack, I've used vaccuum sealed bags. With 7 days planned I've packed 8 rations (just in case), all of them slightly varied, but all of them packed with just a little more than I'm likely to need. Within each pack are nuts, dried fruit, a snack bar or two and some biscuits. I prefer vaccuum sealed bags over ziplock bags as they are more reliably water and airtight, do a better job of keeping contents fresh and eliminate dead air inside packaging with helps to reduce packing size.
