I hesitantly stayed away from the ocean again today and instead embarked upon another late afternoon/evening kayak fishing session in the Clarence river at Maclean. With the water as equally muddy as the day before, I figured there was a fair chance I might even hook me another bass. I didn't though and truth be told, I was actually more satisfied with one of the flatties I caught today - a 50 -55cm-ish sized fish that fell for the very same Gulp minnow (on the same Mantis jighead) the bass swallowed the day before. I caught a couple more flatties in the same patch using the same lure, but closer to 30cm in size, these were released. The big one was kept for the table.

All of these bites came from one of my own secret little patches that is almost always good for a few flatties. I dare say had I experimented with a few more lures here, I would have caught quite a few more fish. As it was, my hook up rate at this particular spot X was pretty high once again, catching 3 flatties in less than 20 minutes. I might have stuck around for a few more casts but with the sun going down I wanted to have a quick fish in the other spot X - the one that I'd marked yesterday. I trolled a few deeper diving lures down here, but nothing. In my heart I know that live baiting would be the best approach, though my next attempt will involve Rapala Magnum lures, which I usually only tie on in the ocean. Whatever they are, these fish are pretty big and just about everything else seems to like these lures, so why not?
